Jennifer Bennett joins the Juniata College biology research team as a von Liebig Postdoctoral Fellow in 2006. She comes to Juniata after completing her doctoral degree in biological sciences at Duquesne University in 2006. She worked as a graduate research assistant prior to coming to Juniata.
She earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry in 1997 from La Roche College in Pittsburgh, Pa, and went on to earn a master's degree in biological sciences in 2000 from Duquesne. As a von Liebig fellow, she will oversee undergraduate student research and teach introductory biology labs and courses.
Her research interests focus on the bacteria Streptomyces coelicolor, particularly in identifying genes and gene mutations that have significance for industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
She received the 2005 Bayer School Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Teaching from Duquesne's Center for Teaching Excellence. She has taught a variety of courses at Duquesne and taught a microbiology course as an adjunct instructor at Penn State New Kensington in 2002.
She was nominated for Duquesne's Outstanding Graduate Student Award in 2004 and received a First Place Award for Graduate Student Oral Presentation from the Allegheny Branch of the American Society of Microbiology. She has presented research and posters at wide range of professional conferences.
She is a member of the American Society of Microbiology.
