Professor Byron joined the faculty in 1994; Ph.D., M.A.I.A., Ohio University; M.S., the University of Hartford; B.S.Ed., Western Connecticut State College. Prior to his arrival at Juniata, he was an Assistant Professor of Education at Seton Hill College in Greensburg, Pa. While completing his doctorate, he was a part-time instructor and assistant professor at the College of Education at Ohio University. Dr. Byron's prior experiences include: program analysis for Aetna Life and Casualty Company; teaching English as a Second Language with the United States Air Force at Nha Trang Air Base in the Republic of Vietnam; and teaching at the Mitchell Elementary School in Woodbury, Connecticut.
Dr. Byron's experiences and expertise lie in the various aspects of international education. He has been a guest speaker and presenter at several professional conferences where he has discussed the importance of implementing international education at various levels of the curriculum. He served on Ohio University's 'Internationalizing The College Curriculum Workshop' planning committee in 1991. In addition to teaching in South Vietnam, Dr. Byronserved on the Ohio University's teacher education development project team in the Kingdom of Swaziland in southern Africa and taught in the Primary Education division of the University of Swaziland.
Here at Juniata, Dr. Byron has served on several faculty committees and been a visiting member of the International Education Committee. He assumed the position as Chair of the department in 1999, teaches courses in the Education Department and supervises elementary student teachers. Along with teaching and advising responsibilities, Dr. Byron has served on several Pennsylvania Department of Education accreditation teams and is a member of the alumni board of Ohio University's College of Education.
Dr. Byron is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, an honor society for educators, and Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies. He also is an active member of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators (PAC-TE). He was elected to the PAC-TE Board of Directors in 2000 for a two-year term and is on the planning committee for the association's annual conference.
