Professor DeHaas joined Juniata in 1997 after completing her work as an associate professor of special education at the University of Northern Colorado. She earned her Ph.D. in special education and human development and family studies from Penn State University, her M.Ed. in special education/educational leadership from Providence College, and her B.S. in special and elementary education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. DeHaas led the development and Pennsylvania Department of Education approval of the unified early childhood/special education and elementary education/special education programs at Juniata College in 1997.
Her interests focus on pedagogy for both general and special education teacher candidates related to working effectively with students with diverse needs. She is also interested in the impact of disabilities on the social and emotional development of young girls. Dr. DeHaas has published numerous articles and book chapters and has given many professional presentations.
In early 1999, Dr. DeHaas was a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Education six member team responsible for writing the new special education teacher education standards. Over the past few years, she has served a reviewer for the PDE in program approval of unified general/special education teacher preparation programs. She is responsible for teaching several special education courses at Juniata.
Professor DeHaas is certified to teach elementary education and special education in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. She holds Director of Special Education and Elementary Principal certificates in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
Dr. DeHaas lives with her husband, Michael Straw and her chocolate lab, Ruby, in Altoona.
