Professor Gustafson was an aviator in the U.S. Navy before pursuing his academic interests. A magna cum laude graduate from Jacksonville University, he went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and worked as a research scientist for the Wisconsin Institute for Environmental Studies.

He came to Juniata in 1976 as a plant ecologist. He has taught courses in botany, limnology, and brewing science. He has a wide variety of interests including sustainable living, green architecture, and gardening.

Dr. Gustafson is the recipient of Juniata's 1981 Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award and several other awards, including the Biology Honor Society Student Award, the Creager Botany Award, and was named a Woodrow Wilson Designate.

With research interests in field work and system-level ecology, he is author and co-author of articles published in such publications as Freshwater Wetlands, Aquatic Botany and Photosynthetica.
