Dr. Kim Richardson has been a member of the faculty and administration of Juniata College since 1979. As part of the Education Department at Juniata, she has served as a professor in language and literacy methods courses, supervisor of elementary school student teachers, and Department Chair. As Associate Dean of Academic Affairs from 1990-1996, she directed the Office of International Programs increasing the scope of that office's services and programs. While in that capacity, Dr. Richardson worked with the faculty in developing an International Studies Certificate and in establishing an ESL program at the College.
Dr. Richardson did her undergraduate work at Duke University, majoring in Political Science. She earned a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education at Old Dominion University and a Ph.D. degree from Temple University in the Psychology of Reading. In addition to her public school teaching experience in Virginia, her college teaching experience includes positions at Old Dominion University, Temple University, Site Director for the Brethren Colleges Abroad programs at the College of St. Paul and St. Mary in Cheltenham, England and the Foreign Language Institute in Dalian, China.
Dr. Richardson's academic work has been recognized by various awards; 'Teacher of the Year' (Delta Sigma Lambda Sorority at Old Dominion University, 1975), Temple University Fellowship (1975-76, 1977-78), Christian R. And Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching (1983), May Day Honor Woman of the Year (1989) and the Beachley Award for Academic Service (1996).
Dr. Richardson is a member of the International Reading Association, Keystone State Reading Association and the Raystown Country Reading Council of which she has been President, Vice-President and Treasurer. She has served on the Board of Directors of the English Speaking Union, the Huntingdon Literacy Council, the Huntingdon County Child Development, Inc., and has volunteered and served on boards of other community organizations.
In addition to giving presentations and workshops at professional conferences, nationally, internationally and locally, she has published essays in one of the International Reading Associations journals, Reading Teacher. She has also written biographical sketches of minority women for NOW and two Brethren Colleges Abroad Director's Manuals; one for England and one for China.
She is married to Sandy McBride.
