If you work with a partner, please do so for ALL portions of the assignment,
and make sure both your names are in the file.
For the answers which you are asked to type
below, please create one MS Word document, which has the name:
ma103Assignment07YOURNAME.
Saving in MS Word should automatically give this file the proper extension of
.doc or .docx. You should upload this
file in Moodle prior to the deadline. Clearly label which Activity and problem
you are answering. It might be helpful to put in a "Page Break" between
the answers for Activities, where appropriate.
Anywhere below, when you are asked to paste a graph created in Excel into your
Word document, you may simply paste the graph. You do NOT need to import the
entire worksheet associated with it.

D. Read Topic 7 in the textbook, and work the assigned
Exploration problems as listed for each day on the course web-site. You do NOT
need to turn in the Exploration problems, but they are useful in preparing for
the written exam.
E. Activity 7.1 The specific questions for Activity 7.1 are on pg. 459 - 464 in your
textbook, where you can also find directions for using Excel 2003. If you are
using Excel 2007, you can find directions on how to use it for Activity 7.1
at the link Excel
2007 Instructions for Activity 7.1.
- Type your answer for #1.
- For #2, just download the file EA7.1.1
Deadly Earthquakes.xls.
- For #3, sort the data as specified, and then type the answers to the questions.
- Type your answer for #4.
- For #5, compute the relative energy of each of the earthquakes following
the directions, and then paste the spreadsheet with your results into your
Word document.
- For #6, create the scatterplot, paste it into your Word document, and then
type your answers to #6(a) - #6(d).
- For #7, follow the directions to calculate the logarithm, but you do NOT need to paste the calculations into your Word document.
- Type your answer for #8.
- for #9, create the requested scatterplot, paste it into your Word document,
and then type your answers to #9(a) - #6(c).
- Type your answer for #10.
- For #11, follow the directions to add a column with the energy formatted
in scientific notation, but you do NOT need to paste the
new column into your Word document.
- For #12 - #14, follow the directions to update your Excel spreadsheet, and
type in the answers requested.
- For #15, use the file EA7.1.2
Earthquake Casualt.xls. Create the requested plot, paste it into your
Word document, and then type your explanation of what the graph shows.

where you can also find directions for using Excel.

Remember that when you multiply numbers in scientfic
notation, you add the exponents: 2 x 102 * 4 x 105 =
8 x 107
and when you divide numbers in scientific notation,
you subtract exponents: 4 x 105 / 2 x 102 = 2 x 103
- Type your answer for #3.
- Do the required calculation, and type your answers for #4.
- For #5, create the spreadsheet, and paste (the first 20 years) into your
Word document.
- Type your answers for #6 and #7.
- Modify your spreadsheet as directed in #8, and paste (the first 20 years)
into your Word document.
- Type your answers (or explanations) for #9 - #16.
