Texas at Austin. My dissertation, titled "El idealismo sintético
de don Juan Valera: Teoría y práctica," was directed
by Dr. Lee Fontanella.

2002-2006: Guatemala, Service Projects
Initiated and coordinated service trips to Guatemala, working
primarily with a partner school, Colegio Mixto Miguel Angel Asturias.
This private school offers an empowering and innovative education to poor
and middle-class youth in Quetzaltenango. Trips in the summer of 2002
(6 weeks), spring break of 2003 (8 days), the summer of 2004 (6 weeks), and the suumer of 2006
have included Juniata faculty, staff, students, alumni, members of the
Stone Church of the Brethren, and health professionals from central Pennsylvania.
2001 Madrid, Spain, Sabbatical Research
Spent six months conducting research at the National Library
on the topic Ideological and Aesthetic Shift in Fin de Siglo
Spain (1890-1905). Also visited Universitat Jaume I in Castellón
and Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Sevilla to explore establishing exchange
programs, and visited the University of Barcelona to assess the BCA exchange
program.
2000 Honduras, Service Learning Project
Initiated and co-led a group of 14 students and four Juniata
staff for an eight-day Spring Break trip that combined a service project
in an Honduran orphanage and a study tour of various women's, indigenous,
environmental, and development organizations as well as a visit to the
Mayan ruins of Copán.
1998: Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Faculty Exchange
Taught two Spanish literature courses, La Generación del
98 and La Generación del 27, for Ecuadorian students, and an Advanced
Spanish Grammar course for international students. Conducted research
to prepare a general education course titled Myth & Magic Realism,
designed to fulfill Juniata College's cultural analysis requirement.
1997: Juniata College, Project Director for Fulbright Group Travel
Seminar in Costa Rica
Primary responsibility for designing and implementing a four-week
travel seminar for fifteen non-specialist secondary and post-secondary
educators on the topic: “Culture, Ecology, and Democracy in Costa Rica.”

Certified to conduct and rate Oral Proficiency Interviews by

Puerto Rico
Selected to participate in this intensive six-week exchange program

during the summer of 1992.

world, with a primary emphasis on Latin America. I have participated in
and provided leadership for work and study delegations to Mexico, Guatemala,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and am currently coordinating
a partnership between Stone Church of the Brethren and Colegio Mixto Miguel
Angel Asturias in Guatemala.
